Some people will always find ways to try and belittle who you are and the things that define you. They hide behind the cover of false sincerity trying to disguise what may simply be envy, jealousy or some unexplainable resentment of you. You could be the sweetest, and they’ll call you sour. You could be the kindest, and they will call you thoughtless. You could be selfless, and they will call you selfish. You could be the most sincere, and they’ll call you insincere. And so with time you eventually realize, no matter what you do or say, you will never remedy their misinformed, and sometimes deliberate, misconceptions of you.
One evening when I was feeling down about being misunderstood after an unfortunate confrontation at school, my father said to me, “You have a kind heart, but that does not mean everyone is going to love you for it. You have a wonderful mind, but that does not mean everyone is going to respect you. For everyone person that likes you, chances are there is a person that won’t. You can’t have one without the other. They won’t like you regardless of what you do or accomplish so there is no point in trying to appease those who have a problem with you because if they sincerely wanted to know and appreciate who you are, they would give you a chance to remedy their misconceptions. At the end of the day, the people that matter in life will always appreciate your essence while accepting your imperfections. The jealous and envious on the other hand will act like they have you figured out because they think just because they know your name, they know your story and what defines you. Be a sincere and good person to others, and let life and karma deal with those who can’t be a sincere and good person to you.”
