My Top 20 Afro-Pop Songs of 2016

Over the past year, I have immersed myself in everything Afrocentric when it comes to music. Afro-Pop in particular has been my favorite. I’m drawn to that contemporary, millennial sound. I started creating monthly posts with my Top 5 videos half way through the year, and I have tried my best do them when I can. And so, it only made sense for me to have a final Top 20 list of the year. Now understand, this is based on my personal tastes and is for the most part subjective: I’m certain some of you would have a completely different list and also certain that there were some amazing songs produced all across the continent this year, songs I may not have personally liked or even heard.

You will notice a lot of Nigeria artists, but lets me honest, their music scene is on another level right now and the rest of us are just trying to catch up. But it goes without saying, Diamond Platnumz was the hardest working man on the African music scene this year.

Anyway, these are my Top 20 videos of the year (not in ranking order). My criteria is based on a few things: rhythm/melody, audio & visual production quality, lyrics & content, and overall artistic presentation: but most importantly, if the song moves me physically or emotionally. View counts didn’t matter.
