Of all the treasures I’ve ever held in my arms, I’m certain you’re the one thing that I’ll love the most. Beyond flesh, beyond blood, you’re my heart and soul; the true manifestation of my everything and all. Whether you are my biological child, adopted child, or stepchild—whichever way you come into my world—know that I love you.
There are so many things I want to share with you about love, life and everything in between, but at times, I’ll be just as clueless as you in moments that challenge your morals, emotions and strength. It’s with that in mind that your grandparents will encourage me to introduce you to God, the answer to all those things that trouble you. But how can I introduce you to someone I sometimes feel as if I barely know?
My only hope is that your mother and I, together or apart, raise you to be the best person you could ever be for yourself, and to those around you. I hope that we raise you to love unconditionally and with all your heart, but to also love wisely. I hope we raise you to be proud of who you are and what defines you, but to never ever feel as though who you are is superior to anyone else.
Now understand that your mother and I will not live forever, and because of this I hope that we raise someone who will be able to stand on their own two feet. As much as I would like to, if I could give you the world, I wouldn’t. Life is about appreciating what you have, working for what you need, and humbling your expectations about the things you want. Spoiling and handing it all to you without teaching you humility, sacrifice, and generosity would be one of the worst things I could do as a parent. I hope we raise you to be someone who is intellectually, emotionally, and financially self-reliant; someone who will never be a moocher, a user, or overly dependent on the generosity of others.
I will never be the perfect father, and let’s be honest, you will never be the perfect child, but it’s in our imperfections that I truly hope our love for each other shines through. The decisions I make won’t always be the right ones, the best ones, or ones you agree with. However, through it all, I sincerely hope you forgive me for the wrong ones, pay attention to the right ones, and regardless of which ones you appreciate or feel the need to dismiss, that you understand they were all made with the best of intentions.
I truly hope I get to meet you one day, and if that day never comes, know that I love you anyway.
Sincerely, Kwapi Vengesayi
