Regardless of political party or ideology, to those who are objective and intellectually honest, what I am about to say will be fair and irrefutable.
The ruling ZANU party is corrupt and incapable of purging itself of that curse without having to toss out and prosecute more people than just the G40-affiliated characters. But one thing you have to give them credit for is how they have mastered the art of reinventing the party in ways that hoodwink the masses and give the illusion of change.
The MDC is inept and disorganized–how can you claim to be capable of leading a country when you can’t even lead and unite a party? Although their supporters’ enthusiasm is commendable and the party’s role as a foil to ZANU is undoubtedly important, its a party that has become its own worst enemy, subjecting us to a series of unforced errors.
Which leads us this point: Zimbabwe needs a third, viable option. Democracy doesn’t work when you’re limited to picking the lesser of two undesirable options. Its too late for 2018, but the next 5 years leading up to 2023, there is an opportunity there: an opportunity to galvanize those who are skeptical of the Big Two and eager for something new and representative of their ideals and sociopolitical expectations.
Not knowing who will lead that charge–Mahere, Mawarire, Masiyiwa–but Zimbabwe needs a party and candidates that are not only capable of presenting a realistic, actionable, and accountable vision of Zimbabwe’s future, but also possess an unshakable respect for the law, citizens’s rights, and individual freedoms.
